President Sergio Mattarella
said Tuesday that Italy's magistrates are obliged only to serve
the law and should not bow to media or political pressure when
making decisions.
He made the comments in a meeting with outgoing and incoming
members of the Italian judiciary's self-governing body, the CSM.
Mattarella stressed that the non-magistrate members of the
CSM should be elected on the basis of their professionalism and
skills and not be representatives of the parties that nominated
them.
