Education Minister Stefania
Giannini on Monday praised the fact that over 400 schools are
staying open this summer as part of the ministry's 'Focus on
Schools' project.
"It's an extraordinary achievement," she said during a
visit to Ilaria Alpi comprehensive high school in Milan.
The ministry project focuses on areas suffering from a high
dropout rate or a high migration one.
Giannini noted that 84 of the schools are in Milan, 94 in
Rome, 148 in Naples and 89 in Palermo. The schools have asked
for 5.8 million euros (1.6 million in Milan alone) from the
ministry for the summer activities.
The minister underscored that the resources that are not
spent will be used to help the project continue after summer
break, in addition to a total of "120 million euros available at
the start of the next school year".
