Pope Francis and Russian
orthodox Patriarch Kirill on Friday had an historic embrace at
Havana Airport in Cuba. The pair exchanged an affectionate
greeting, kissing each other on the cheeks, and sat one beside
the other in front of dozens of photographers and cameramen who
had been admitted to the public part of the meeting. Also
present were Metropolitan Hilarion and Cardinal Kurt Koch. It is
the first meeting ever between the leaders of the Catholic and
Russian Orthodox churches, which split in the Great Schism of
1054. The meeting is expected to last two hours, after which a
joint statement will be released.
