The Undersecretary for Justice, Andrea Delmastro, paid a comprehensive visit to Mexico from 6 to 9 March. During the mission, he had meetings with the Minister of Gobernación, Rosa Icela Rodriguez, with the Undersecretary for Governance, Arturo Medina Padilla, with the Undersecretary for Security, Hector Elizalde, with the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs responsible for Europe, Maria Teresa Mercado, with the President of the Court of Justice of Mexico City, Rafael Guerra, and with the Commander of the National Guard, Hernan Cortes Hernandez.
At the end of the meeting at the Ministry of Security, Delmastro signed a Declaration of Intent between the Italian Ministry of Justice, the Mexican Ministry of Security, and the Rome-based United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (Unicri), aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fight against organised crime, in criminal justice and penitentiary administration, and in the fight against extortion and corruption. The cooperation will take place under the aegis of Unicri, which carried out an initial mission in December 2024 to meet the Mexican authorities, together with representatives of the Italian Embassy. Undersecretary Delmastro's mission ended with a visit to the federal women's penitentiary in Morelos, and a working lunch at the Istituto Mexicano para la Justicia (Imjus), also involved in the letter of intent.
'My second mission to Mexico,' said the Undersecretary, 'was aimed at agreeing with the new Mexican government authorities on the path to further strengthen the already solid cooperation between the two countries in the field of justice and security and in the fight against organised crime, through the cooperative support of the United Nations (UNICRI). Throughout the meetings, the strong interest of the counterparts in developing cooperation and knowledge of the methodologies acquired by Italy in decades of fighting mafias emerged. Mexico is a stable democracy and a reliable partner, and the Italian government is ready to strengthen cooperation in the common challenge against organised crime'.
