The Italian Embassy team in Lebanon, led by Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli, visited the advanced water treatment plant in Zahle, built thanks to an Italian soft loan.
'Our financial lifeline,' explained the embassy, 'ends this year. Now Lebanon should step in to guarantee the plant's operation and maintenance'. The 'Zahle Wastewater Treatment Plant', built with Italian aid credit financing of 22 million 396 thousand euro, was inaugurated in 2019. It is an industrial and domestic wastewater treatment plant that contributes to the rehabilitation of two important Lebanese rivers, the Litani and the Berdawni. The plant purifies wastewater from the city of Zahle and the villages of Kaa El Rim and Hazzerta. In the first phase, it is intended to clean the waste water produced by the 205,000 inhabitants of the region (in 2030 this number is expected to rise to 300,000) and the industrial sites in the area. The results of analyses on the quality of the water after treatment are excellent, meeting international standards, and the output water can be used in agriculture, one of the region's main economic activities.
