The Marche seaside town of Pesaro was
officially designated Italy's culture capital for 2024 by the
cabinet on Wednesday night.
The pretty resort, famed worldwide fro its Rossino Opera
Festival, beat off competition from its southern Marche 'sister'
town Ascoli Piceno.
Other cities and towns that lost out were Chioggia, Grosseto,
Mesagne, Sestri Levante with Tigullio, Siracusa, the Union of
Comuni Paestum-Alto Cilento, Viareggio and Vicenza.
Mayor Matteo Ruicci told ANSA "the official designation was
important because we now have a million euros of funding and can
really get started in prompting our town.
"We've already been to Paris, and next month we'll be in Los
Angeles and New York.
"It's a great responsibility and a great opportunity for
development for the whole Marche region".
