Education Minister Lorenzo
Fioramonti said Tuesday that Italian teachers should be paid
more.
"It's embarrassing," he told a joint session of the
parliamentary educations committees on his agenda.
Fioramonti stressed the importance of "giving value" to the
work of the teaching body, students, and other staff.
"We need better trained teachers, and better paid ones too.
"We can't allow, also out of national pride, that our
teachers be paid less than other countries, also in countries
similar to us like Spain.
"It becomes embarrassing," he repeated, "also for the
credibility of the country".
On Monday Fioramonti said teachers should get specific
teacher training as they do in other countries.
"A university degree is not enough," he said.
Italy's teachers are among the lowest paid in the European
Union.
