Veneto Green Europe Regional
Councillor Andrea Zanoni on Tuesday told ANSA he has filed a
criminal complaint to forestry Carabinieri police in Mestre over
Donald Trump Jr allegedly killing a protected species of duck
while hunting in a Venice lagoon.
According to Zanoni's complaint, Trump Jr allegedly hunted
protected species of birds, which constitutes a criminal as well
as an administrative violation.
A video of Trump Jr out hunting has become a case in Veneto and
beyond after Zanoni said criminal and administrative violations
had been committed in the area of Campagna Lupia last December.
Zanoni told ANSA that the violations included the fact that
Trump Jr should have resided in an Italian region to be granted
a hunting permit, which is strictly personal under Italian
legislation, and that the Veneto region imposes a different
hunting calendar for each species.
"Were these limits respected? Not according to the images", he
said, referring to the online video which he said showed a
number of people, including Trump Jr, killing various ducks.
The video, which was also published by newspaper Corriere della
sera, shows Trump Jr shooting at ducks and then addressing the
camera and pointing to an orange-brown duck among at least six
other dead waterfowl around him.
The dead waterfowl included a ruddy shelduck, which is protected
by the EU Birds Directive and Italian wildlife protection
legislation, said Zanoni who also claimed the video was shot in
a special conservation area south of Venice.
Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto commented on the alleged
violation saying he was "waiting for a report to know more and
have all the information" regarding the case.
