Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi on
Monday said more police will be deployed in Naples as part of a
new plan announced by the interior ministry to crack down on
rising youth crime in the southern port city.
"A significant number" of additional police officers will be
deployed permanently, said Manfredi.
Security forces will not only be deployed in "high-impact
operations" but also in the "ordinary management of security -
an ordinary supervision of the territory, especially at night
and during the weekend", explained Manfredi after a meeting at
the prefecture of Naples with Interior Minister Matteo
Piantedosi.
Manfredi said the additional officers will arrive "by the end of
the year, but activities will start right away".
He added that a "new operational plan" will kick off in a week
in key areas of the city.
The new plan was announced on Monday after three teens were
murdered in the area of Naples in just over two weeks.
Arcangelo Correra, 18, was allegedly shot dead by his cousin,
who confessed to murdering him by accident, although police are
still investigating his death.
On November 2, 19-year-old Santo Romano was allegedly shot dead
by a 17-year-old who confessed to investigators that he had
killed Romano because he had "dirtied" his designer shoes.
Emanuele Tufano, 15, was shot dead in downtown Naples in the
night between October 23 and 24 in a gunfight between teen
gangs.
