The opposition centre-left Democratic
Party (PD) has presented a proposal to the Lower House for a
citizenship reform, PD lawmaker Ouidad Bakkali told ANSA on
Monday.
The draft law provides for the so-called ius soli (or law of the
soil in Latin) whereby children who are born in Italy to foreign
parents can be granted citizenship, provided one of the two
parents has legally resided in the country for at least one
year, under the proposal.
The reform would also allow children to be granted citizenship
"if they arrived in Italy by age 12 and attended school for at
least five years", Bakkali said.
The five years would include nursery school, under the
citizenship reform.
Moreover, "in line with the majority of European countries, the
years of continual residency are lowered from 10 to five" to be
granted citizenship, added Bakkali.
