The cabinet on Wednesday approved the
creation of a commission or a technical committee to evaluate a
measure introducing the chemical castration of convicted rapists
as part of the debate on its security bill.
The commission would evaluate, "in the respect of constitutional
principles", and in case of sexual violence, the possibility for
a convicted felon to give his consent to psychiatric and
pharmacological treatment including chemical castration, under
the order of the day signed by League party lawmaker Igor Iezzi
which was green lighted by the government.
The measure was first announced by Iezzi this summer and has
been proposed for a long time by the MP's right-wing League
party as a solution to the spate of rapes and gender-based
violence in Italy.
Iezzi on Wednesday said the measure would "introduce
pharmacological treatment for total androgen suppression for
convicted rapists" to "reduce the risk of recidivism for this
atrocious offense" in what he described as an historic battle of
the League.
