A reported 3,039 people died in road
accidents in Italy in 2023, down 3.8% on the previous year,
according to data released by national statistics institute
Istat and Italian Automobile Club (ACI) on Thursday.
A reported 224,634 people were injured in road accidents, up
0.5% compared to the previous year, Istat and ACI said.
Overall, road accidents were 166,525, up 0.4%.
Although the number of accidents and injuries was slightly
higher than in 2022, fatalities decreased, according to the
data.
Compared to 2019, the benchmark for the 2021-2030 decade,
accidents shrank by 3.3%, road victims by 4.2% and the injured
by 6.9%.
The social cost of road accidents leading to injuries was nearly
18 billion euros in 2023, or 1% of national GDP, the report
said.
