An armed gang staged a cinema-style
security van heist on a southern Italian highway Thursday,
blocking traffic in both directions with flaming cars and then
forcing guards to hand over more than three million euros before
making off.
Long tailbacks formed on both sides of state highway 613 near
Brindisi after the gang set fire to at least three cars and a
van to stop police from reaching the blocked security van.
The bandits fired several shots using machine guns during the
robbery but no one was injured.
