Italian police have reported to
prosecutors three of the stowaway migrants whose presence on a
Turkish cargo ship sparked an alarm over a potential attempted
hijacking that led the Italian special forces to intervene on
Friday.
They face charges of bearing weapons.
The Italian authorities have seized two knives and a box cutter.
The 13 male migrants have been taken to a reception centre while
the two women stowaways, one of whom is pregnant, are having
checks in hospital, sources said
Prosecutors will decide whether to press charges for alleged
attempted hijacking in the coming days, sources said.
The entire 22-man crew of the Turkish ship Galata Seaways are
safe after San Marco Brigade special unit intervened off Naples,
where the vessel is anchored.
The captain of the ship sounded that alarm after the presence of
the stowaways was discovered.
Investigators are looking into whether the crew were threatened
by the migrants.
Sources said the stowaways told the authorities were frightened
they would be repatriated after being discovered.
