The mayor of Conselice in the province of Ravenna on Friday ordered the evacuation of all homes in parts of the town that are still flooded for reasons of health and hygiene.
The order, signed by Paola Pula, "became necessary given the difficulties of water dispersal from the built-up area of Conselice, due to the large quantities of water present in the area".
It has been issued in relation to "dangers exclusively linked to contact with stagnant water" amid contamination fears.
"Our only aim is to safeguard health and safety," said the mayor.
"Right now there is no health emergency, but the stagnant water, the failure of the sewage system, the possible interruptions to drinking water supply, and the presence of uncollected waste, make it unsafe to remain in the built-up area that is still flooded," she added.
On Friday Emilia Romagna Governor described the situation in Conselice as "the most dramatic" after its geographical position resulted in particularly high levels of flooding.
The situation is expected to improve in around five days.
Meanwhile a vaccination campaign against tetanus and other infectious diseases is underway.
