A bear killed a 26-year-old man who was running on a mountain in the Val di Sole valley in the northern region of Trentino-Alto Adige, local residents said after his body was discovered in woods late Wednesday.
The victim was named as Andrea Papi, who had gone on his usual run from his home at Caldes, local sources said.
Medical examiners said after examining his body on Mt Peller that it presented wounds compatible with an attack by "a large wild animal".
The inhabitants of Caldes said they were taking a bear attack for granted.
They have been talking about sightings in the area for some time.
Only a month ago, a hiker was attacked in the Rabbi valley by a bear which has been tagged and named MJ5.
"There have been attacks on farm animals in the last month, including a sheep mauled on the edge of the village of Caldes on 19 March," residents told reporters in the village.
"There have been several attacks in the area. We just had to wait for one person to die," they said.
