(see related) Alfredo Cospito, an anarchist who has been on hunger strike for over 100 days to protest against the tough 41 bis prison regime he is being held under, sees no difference between Milan's Opera prison and the facility in Sassari he was previously held in, a regional councillor who visited him said on Thursday.
The 55-year-old was moved to Opera this week because it was deemed better equipped to deal with his medical needs, but he has so far not been taken out of the 41 bis regime, which is usually reserved for mafia bosses.
Anarchist groups have embarked on a wave of violent protests and acts of vandalism against public institutions in relation to Cospito's case.
"Alfredo Cospito said that there is no difference between Sassari and Opera in terms of his needs at the moment and that he does not want favourable treatment," said Michele Usuelli, the Lombardy regional councillor for the +Europa/Radicali group who visited the inmate on Wednesday.
"We spoke for half an hour, standing, with a barrier between us.
"He was alert, responsive and he was breathing well.
"He is able to engage in dialogue, including one with complicated parts".
