(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 2 - Doctors Without Borders (MSF) rescued
41 migrants from a capsized boat off Libya at Italy's request on
Sunday night.
The MSF team on board the Geo Barents rescue ship sprang into
action after receiving a request from the Italian national
maritime rescue coordination centre.
It is the first rescue since the introduction of a new code of
conduct for NGOs operating rescue missions in Italian waters
envisaging fines and seizures, a ban on transshipping, and
authorizations for a single rescue op only.
MSF said the migrant boat tipped over in heavy seas and the 41
survivors, including two women, are now on board the Geo Barents
and receiving assistance from the MSF team. (ANSA).
