The city councils of Anzio and
Nettuno on the Lazio coast south of Rome were dissolved for
mafia infiltration on Tuesday.
The two seaside towns, famous since antiquity as holiday
destinations for Romans, have been placed under special
administration for 18 months.
Commissioners will report to the government on how far the Mob
infiltration has been resolved.
Some 64 people were arrested in a big anti-mafia operation in
the area codenamed Triton recently.
The probe highlighted a high degree f penetration of the local
economy by the Calabria-based 'Ndrangheta mafia, Italy's richest
and most dangerous organised crime outfit thanks to its control
of much of the European cocaine trade.
It is the second time Nettuno has been commissioned off for
criminal infiltration of business and administration sectors
since 2005.
'Ndrangheta bosses had set up a local branch, called 'locale' in
Italian, to manage their control over local public works
tenders as well as purely criminal activities like protection
and drugs rackets.
The town council of Cosoleto near Reggio Calabria was also
dissolved for Mob infiltration Tuesday.
