A Rome civil court on Wednesday
upheld an appeal against a 2019 decree by former interior
minister Matteo Salvini, the current deputy premier and
infrastructure minister, that said children's ID cards must
state who is their 'mother' and 'father' rather than using the
gender-neutral term 'parent'.
The appeal was made by two women who are both the legal mothers
of the same girl.
The court said the decree breached European and international
law.
In a famous speech when she was in opposition in 2019, Premier
Giorgia Meloni railed against mums or dads being called "parent
one, parent one", declaring: "I am a woman. I am a mother. I am
Italian, I am Christian. You will not take that away from me!".
