A 12-year-old girl of Albanian origin
died after a swing broke in a parish oratory in Abruzzo
Wednesday evening.
The girl was playing happily at the oratory at San Pelino, a
'frazione' of the comune of Avezzano (L'Aquila), when a plank
broke and the swing collapsed onto her, killing her.
The girl was rushed to hospital in Avezzano but died shortly
after admission.
She had suffered massive internal injuries.
"I tried all I could to revive her," said nurse Amleto Magnante,
who works in the operating theatre at the hospital.
Speaking with his hands still covered in the girl's blood, he
said "even though I work in the operating theatre, you never get
used to these things".
The girl was described as sunny and happy and her family well
integrated into Italian society.
She lived with her parents, both described as hard workers, in
San Pelino along with an elder sister.
Their flat was a short distance from the oratory, local sources
said.
A probe has been opened into the tragedy.
An autopsy has been ordered.
