The Marmolada glacier in the
Dolomites has lost over 90% of its volume and 70% of its surface
area with respect to 100 years ago, according to the results of
a monitoring study conducted by environmental association
Legambiente with the Italian Glaciological Committee.
It said that the glacier risks disappearing completely within 15
years.
Eleven people lost their lives when a huge chunk of the glacier
broke away on July 3 among high temperatures at the summit.
"It shouldn't take news stories to reminds us that we are in a
total emergency," Legambiente said.
Glaciers around the world are melting fast and are in peril
because of climate change caused by human activity.
