Fashion designer Giorgio Armani and
1982 World Cup winning footballer Marco Tardelli were among 30
people who had to evacuate their homes on the southern island of
Pantelleria after a wildfire there overnight.
The fire started at two points, 400 metres from each other, but
police have said this does not necessarily mean it was arson.
The fire destroyed dozens of hectares of Mediterranean maquis,
or vegetation, and undergrowth.
Marsala prosecutors have opened a probe into the fire, which was
put out on Thursday morning.
"The situation has returned to normal," Mayor Vincenzo Campo
told ANSA.
Wildfires, many of them arson, have been devastating swathes of
Italian countryside amid a rash of heat waves.
Experts have linked the rising heat to human-caused climate
change.
