Two base jumpers, one American and one
Australian, have died in northern Italy over the last two days.
A 33-year-old American base jumper, who was at first reported to
be British, died in Trentino on Friday. The man, who has yet to
be identified, was unable to open his parachute, police said.
This may have been due to an error in trajectory, they said.
The accident happened on the Monte Brento.
People who were with him called emergency services after the
incident at around seven o'clock in the morning. Medics tried to
revive the man but there was nothing they could do for him.
A 35-year-old Australian base jumper who went missing in Friuli
Thursday was found dead on Friday.
The man, who has not been identified yet, jumped from Monte
Cimone.
He was at the bottom of an almost inaccessible gully at a height
of over 2,000 metres, when he jumped.
The body was recovered in a highly delicate operation by the
Friuli regional rescue helicopter service.
They used a 'barycentric hook' over 70 metres long to pick up
the body.
Autopsies of the two men have been ordered.
