Italian police on Friday smashed an
international gang that extorted the elderly in Calabria,
Romania, the Netherlands and Germany.
Gang members have been charged with taking advantage of the
vulnerable, extortion, receiving stolen goods and laundering
illicit profits, among other things.
Police from Calabria and Europol carried out the operation.
Some 16 people were arrested on warrants issued by prosecutors
in Locri, a high-crime Calabrian city.
Ten people were detained in prison while six were placed under
house arrest.
