Italians will be intransigent,
determined, and united in the face of Russian aggression in
Ukraine, President Sergio Mattarella said Friday.
Speaking the quake-hit town of Norcia, he said "the world does
not intend to see the principles of co-existence trampled".
Europeans, he said "will not bow to the violence of force: today
it is Ukraine and tomorrow we don't know what targets".
Mattarella said peace was in danger, and added that Europe could
not accept the madness of war.
"We cannot accept that the madness of war should destroy what
the people of Europe have built. We did not just rise from the
fratricidal wars of the past but we made a great effort to
achieve a world of mutual respect and collaboration. A world
that does not intend to see the principles of co-existence
trampled.
"Yesterday a new tragedy hit Europe, with violence and not on a
single country but on the whole of Europe jeopardizing peace and
freedom.
"And this concerns all os us".
