Police in the Democratic Republic of Congo have said that they have made a breakthrough in the investigation into the ambush last year in which Ambassador Luca Attanasio was killed along with his his Carabiniere escort Vittorio Iacovacci, and their World Food Programme driver Mustapha Milambo.
Police in the province of North Kivu said they have arrested several members of the gang that staged the attack in February 2021.
They allegedly wanted to kidnap the ambassador and demand a ransom of one million dollars.
The attack took place while the ambassador was travelling to visit a WFP school-feeding programme.
