The first case of the COVID-19 new
variant of concern Omicron has been confirmed in Sardinia, a
Sassari hospital said after sequencing the strain Monday.
The new more infectious variant was found in a traveller who had
just come back from South Africa, it said.
Passengers who shared a Rome.-Alghero flight with the passenger
are set to have a second COVID test after coming up negative in
a first one.
They are in precautionary quarantine.
So far Italy has had one small Omicron cluster at Caserta, home
of a businessman who recently returned from southern Africa, and
other smaller ones in a handful of places around the country.
