Italian police on Tuesday arrested
three people on suspicion of growing hemp plants to get cannabis
on the island of Sardinia.
Police seized 1,700 hemp blooms for a value of 17 million euros
in the case.
The plants were grown at some 500 sites at Oristano, Mogoro and
Ghilarza, including farms, sheep pens, outhouses and land.
Police also seized illegally held weapons.
Some 16,000 illegal plants were seized.
The hemp contained an active ingredient of cannabis that was
higher than the legal limit, police said.
