The body of the third victim of the
extreme weather that has battered Catania and the surrounding
province in recent days has been found, sources said on
Thursday.
Angela Caniglia, 61, was swept away by flood waters on Sunday in
the town of Scordia along with her husband, Sebastiano Gambera,
aged 67.
Gambera's body was found on Monday.
On Tuesday Paolo Claudio Agatino Grassidonio, 53, drowned after
being engulfed by flood water at Gravina di Catania.
Catania had a quiet night after its streets and squares were
turned into cascading 'rivers' on Tuesday because of the
flooding, which caused massive damage in addition to loss of
life.
But its schools, public offices and non-essential shops were
closed on Thursday ahead of the expected arrival of a cyclone
that is forming between Sicily and Malta.
The cyclone, which could become a Mediterranean hurricane with
winds of over 100 km/h, is forecast to hit Sicily and Calabria
late on Thursday or early on Friday.
Scientists say human-caused climate change is making extreme
weather events more frequent and more intense.
