A mafia boss at Latina south of Rome told clan members over the phone in a wiretap published Tuesday that "you hold the city of Latina in your hands", police said after an operation that saw 33 Di Silvio affiliates and bosses arrested for extortion and drug trafficking.
Some 27 people were taken to jail and six others placed under house arrest.
Charges include mafia association, drug trafficking and distribution, extortion, kidnapping, theft and illegal weapons possession.
The probe, which involves a total of 50 people, kicked off after a number of 'punitive' raids against shopkeepers and restaurateurs, nightclub and pub owners that occurred in Latina in 2019.
Latina, the second biggest city in Lazio after Rome, was founded by Mussolini on land reclaimed from the Pontine Marshes in 1932.
The Di Silvio clan are of Roma extraction.
