Bari city council on Thursday took
over the running of a beach deemed to be at risk of mafia
infiltration.
The Puglia regional administrative court (TAR) rejected the
current beach management's appeal against the move.
The beach, at Torre Quetta, will be taken out of the hands of
the Il Veliero company.
The company will have to clear out of the beach and an
associated bar.
The Puglia mafia is the Sacra Corona Unita
(United Holy Crown, SCU), which is highly active in extortion
and drugs rackets.
The SCU is Italy's fourth and smallest mafia.
The others are Calabria's 'Ndrangheta, Sicily's Cosa Nostra, and
Campania's Camorra.
