Italian photojournalist Gabriele Micalizzi, who was injured on the front lines of the battle between ISIS and Kurdish forces in eastern Syria on February 11, arrived back Italy on Sunday evening on a military aircraft in an operation coordinated by the Italian foreign ministry.
Micalizzi, 34, arrived in Milan from a US military hospital in Baghdad, where he had been transferred after he was hit by shards from an RPG rocket, and is now being treated at Milan's San Raffaele Hospital.
Initial reports said Micalizzi had lost vision in his left eye, but later he told doctors he could still see.
However, parts of two fingers of his right hand had to be amputated, his left arm is fractured, and he has temporarily lost hearing in his left ear.
Micalizzi is one of the best-known Italian war photographers, having worked on the front lines of conflicts for nearly a decade, and his photos have been published in many international publications including the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the Wall Street Journal.
