The mayor of the
Calabrian town of Delianuova, Francesco Rossi, was among 18
people arrested Monday in a sweep against the 'Ndrangheta's
Alvaro clan from Sinopoli, sources said.
Rossi, elected three years ago on a civic list, is accused of
mafia association, sources said.
The clan's main source of income was from contracts on public
works, police said.
Those arrested are accused of mafia association, extortion,
aggravated fraud, and fraudulent transfer of property.
Two local businessmen were also arrested.
The Alvaro clan is one of the most powerful in the Tyrrhenian
area of the Reggio Calabria province, police said.
