Sandro Chiocchio, mayor of
the town of Cocullo in the Abruzzo region, has issued an
ordinance banning people from feeding stray cats there, in an
attempt to curb the spread of the cats' waste on the streets of
the historic centre.
"Citizen complaints have increased; they are literally
nauseated by the terrible smell spread by the cat droppings
everywhere," Chiocchio said.
Walter Caporale, president of the non-profit Italian Animal
Activists, said if Chiocchio doesn't revoke the ordinance, the
association will sue him for animal abuse.
