A home-made device that had
been taken into evidence accidentally went off in a police
station in the Puglia town of Andria on Friday, shattering
windows and injuring two people.
The incident was accidental and not due to criminal activity
or an attack, Bari police headquarters said in a statement.
The device consisted of a tin can containing salt and sugar,
the statement said.
The can had somehow ended up in a bag of trash, and exploded
when a cleaning person moved it.
Investigators will look into why the can was in the trash in
the first place, instead of being in the evidence locker.
The cleaner has been hospitalized with hearing impairment,
burns to his left leg and foot, abrasions to the extremities,
and a 20-day prognosis.
An employee of the Andria police station also suffered
contusions, which should heal in five days.
