Nostra 'boss of bosses' Bernardo Provenzano has reorganised
their Corleone clan after waves of arrests almost wiped it out,
police said Tuesday.
Carmelo Gariffo, 47, who got out of prison two years ago,
is said to have revived the fortunes of the clan that rose to
the top of the Sicilian Mafia under his uncle, who died in July
aged 83.
Police revealed Gariffo's role as they unveiled an
operation which, thanks to complaints from 12 local businessmen,
led to the arrests of about a dozen members of the Corleone clan
for demanding 'pizzo' extortion payments around the town near
Palermo.
Anti-mafia experts stressed the importance of keeping the
Corleone family down, especially when Bernardo Provenzano's
other nephew, Salvatore Gariffo, gets out of jail in 2018.
