The relatives of a two-year-old
boy who fell down a stairwell vandalized two public hospitals
over alleged delays in the of the infant, public health
authorities in Taranto said Tuesday.
The child suffered serious head wounds after falling four
meters from a residential building staircase that didn't have a
guardrail.
He was taken to Moscati Hospital and then transferred to
Santissima Annunziata Hospital in central Bari, where he was
admitted with a reserved prognosis.
His relatives damaged doors and windows and wrecked the
radiology department at Mosconi Hospital in a rage over alleged
delays in diagnosing and transferring him.
Police had to intervene at the second hospital as well,
public health officials said.
They added that medical personnel did their utmost for the
infant and that stooping to vandalism in a public hospital is "a
true moral defeat" while respecting public health facilities is
what "distinguishes us from savages".
The little boy's condition has reportedly improved.
