A group of bandits carrying
rifles launched an assault on an armoured cash-in-transit van
travelling in the province of Sassari in Sardinia on Tuesday.
The van was travelling on highway 131 Carlo Felice when at
least eight armed bandits attacked around 8:00 in the morning on
Tuesday. Police intervened quickly but the bandits escaped after
an exchange of fire that did not cause any injuries.
According to local sources, the assault failed because the
security cases that the money was being transported in exploded
during the exchange of fire, staining and irreversibly damaging
the banknotes, which had an overall value of between 350,000 and
500,000 euros.
Police are now searching for the bandits.
