Stellantis CEO Carlo Tavares said
Tuesday that the company is "working hard" to avoid the risk of
factory closures as recently announced by carmaker Volkswagen.
"We are working hard to avoid the situation in which Volkswagen
finds itself", said Tavares.
The issue depends on many factors, the CEO told reporters, "from
consumers, to how quickly we will be able to cut costs and the
willingness of European countries to support consumers who buy
electrical cars.
"We have taken many unpopular decisions to avoid Volkswagen's
situation that were not always well understood, perhaps because
at times we didn't explain them well", he noted.
Europe's largest carmaker Volkswagen announced earlier this
month that it was considering the hypothesis of shutting down
production sites in home country Germany.
