Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Saturday his having chided European Central
Bank Governor Chrstine Lagarde for not being braver after she
cut rates by a a quarter point Thursday was not a "whim" on his
part.
"We have to do all we can to restart from the real economy,
which means industry and agriculture," said Tajani, stressing
that "when I spoke of scant courage by the ECB I was talking
about this; the cost of money is high and it it hard for
businesspeople, above all young ones, to get access to easier
credit and plan long-term investments."
He underscored "so it was not, on my part, a whim".
Lagarde has stressed the ECB's independence of politics.
