The European Commission said Monday
that a 400-million-euro bridge loan that the Italian State
granted Alitalia when it was in extraordinary administration in
2019 was illegal aid.
It added that Rome must now take action to recover the money
plus interest, while specifying that ITA Airways, the slimmed
down State-controlled airline that replaced Alitalia in 2021,
would not have to pay up.
The Commission had already said that it did not consider ITA to
be the "economic successor of Alitalia" when it ruled two loans
worth a total of 900 million euros that Rome granted the former
flag-carrier in 2017 were illegal state aid.
