Italian per capita household worth was lower than any other country except Spain at the end of 2021, national statistics institute ISTAT and the Bank of Italy said in a joint survey Friday.
Measured as a ratio of population, the per capita net wealth of Italian households at the end of 2021 was lower than that of all other countries except Spain (where the latest available figure is 2020).
According to the ISTAT-Bank of Italy report, since 2018, per capita wealth growth has been modest for households in France, the UK, Germany and Italy and more sustained for Canadian and US households, thanks to favourable dynamics in financial assets.
In recent years, especially in 2021, growth for Italy has been lower than for other countries.
The report also said that net household worth rose in 2021 but fell in real terms.
At the end of 2021, the net wealth of Italian households, measured as the sum of real assets (dwellings, land) and financial assets (deposits, securities, shares) net of financial liabilities, amounted to EUR 10,422 billion, or EUR 176,000 per capita.
Wealth increased by over 300 billion at current values compared to the previous year (+3%), continuing the 2019 trend not interrupted by the pandemic.
The report specified, however, that in real terms, wealth fell by 1.1%, in contrast to 2020 (+1.7%), and in relation to income it fell from 8.71 to 8.66.
