A rest and recuperation facility for
food delivery riders opened in Florence on Tuesday.
The council-owned property, run by the CGIL trade union, is
called Casa Rider and provides hygienic and relaxation services
for the riders that race across the Tuscan capital delivering
food packages, many of them immigrants.
Casa Rider is open from Monday to Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30
p.m at present.
Official said extensions of days and hours will be evaluated
over time, based on the needs expressed by the riders.
Services include toilets, a refreshment area, the possibility of
access to equipment for small bicycle repairs and the
possibility of recharging work tools, such as cell phones and
bike batteries.
In the shelter in Via Palmieri there are also information desks
on aspects of immigrant working life such as obtaining a
residence permit, and checking for contractual irregularities.
Training courses and workshops are planned outside of opening
hours.
Luigi Giove of CGIL explained that the union "has decided to
finance this project for two years", while the mayor of Florence
Sara Funaro spoke of "a very important message that Florence
gives on the front of job protection, it is a response to those
who carry out an activity that often coincides with
precariousness. "These workers will finally have a place to rest
and refresh, a space for aggregation and socialization, but also
opportunities to listen and discuss".
