Italy's highest administrative court,
the Council of State, has suspended an order from the regional
government of Abruzzo to cull 469 deer, ruling in favour of an
appeal filed by animal rights groups, judicial sources said on
Monday.
The appeals judges overturned a decision of the Abruzzo Regional
Administrative Court (TAR) that had rejected the appeal filed by
the anti-vivisection league (LAV), LNDC Animal Protection and
WWF Italia.
The TAR will now have to rule on the merits.
In its October 9 ruling, TAR said the Abruzzo deer population
had been underestimated and also cited road safety concerns in
its sentence approving a regional authorities' decision to cull
the deer.
