World number one Jannik Sinner has won the US Open.
The 23-year-old player beat American Taylor Fritz 6-3 6-4 7-5 at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday, conquering his sixth trophy this year after the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Miami, Halle and Cincinnati.
Sinner on Sunday became the only Italian singles champion to win a US Open tournament together with Flavia Pennetta, who clinched the women's singles championship in 2015.
After his historic victory, Sinner said "this title means so much, the last period was truly not easy for me, my team supported me every day".
The Italian player tested positive for doping last April, although an independent investigation by ITIA, the world's tennis anti-doping agency, cleared him of doping due to an "unconscious intake" of a substance used by his physiotherapist.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Sinner said he wanted to dedicate the victory to his aunt "because she is unwell and I don't know for how long she will remain in my life".
"And it is so beautiful to share this moment with her, she has been an important person for me.
"I wish good health to everybody, even though it's not always possible to make such a wish", Sinner said before receiving the prize from Andrè Agassi.
