Milan's Beccaria juvenile prison will
have a new prison guard commander and a support unit for the
facility's personnel starting on Monday.
The announcement was made by the Department of juvenile justice
and community which also announced that an inspection had been
completed at the facility and new urgent "infrastructural
interventions" planned after two brothers and a third inmate
were reported to have escaped from the prison at the weekend.
The jail breaks was reported amid widespread alarm about
conditions and overcrowding in Italian jails, following a spate
of suicides among inmates and a series of episodes of unrest.
A riot also took place at Beccaria last weekend.
The department said security officials have been mobilized to
find the young fugitives.
Alfonso Greco, the leader of Sappe in Lombardy, said on Sunday
that the brothers were the ringleaders of recent disturbances
and it was the third time one of them had tried to escape.
