President Sergio Mattarella
reportedly called the President of CONI (Italian Olympic
Committee, ed), Giovanni Malagò, to ask him to tell the Italian
volleyball girls that he had followed all their matches and to
congratulate them on this "amazing" Olympic tournament, sources
said after they won their historic first gold against champions
USA on Sunday.
He also congratulated coach Julio Velasco and the president of
the federation, Giuseppe Manfredi for this gold and President
Malagò for the many Italian successes in these Olympics, they
said.
