Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani on Wednesday set up a task force on Venezuela
where dozens of people have been killed in a crackdown on
protests at the allegedly fraudulent re-election of President
Nicolás Maduro.
On Tajani's instructions, a permanent task force was set up at
the foreign ministry, the Farnesina, to monitor developments in
Venezuela.
At the first meeting chaired by the secretary general,
Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, the issues related to the
emergency were addressed and initiatives to be taken in the
coming weeks were examined.
In coordination with the Italian Embassy in Caracas and the
consulates in Caracas and Maracaibo, there will be continuous
monitoring of the evolution of the situation and the problems
related to political opponents and Italian citizens subject to
measures by the local authorities.
