A young Italian astrophysicist has
decided to return to Italy after 10 years in Germany in one sign
of reversing the Bel Paese's chronic brain drain.
Mattia Sormani, 35, won a 1.5 million grant from the European
Research Council (ERC) and opted to transfer it from Heidelberg
University, where he did the research that earned him the prize,
to the Como branch of Italy's Insubria University.
Sormani got the ERC Starting Grant 2023 for a project to study
how matter is transported towards the centre of the Milky Way
and the ways that Black Holes are fed.
He is the first ERC winner to pick Insubria for his grant
project.
